Presentation Title: It's Not a Sprint, It's a Marathon: Sustaining Quality Prevention Programming in Communities

Presentation Overview

This talk will address the state of the field of evidence-based prevention. It will focus on both its strengths and current and future challenges. Dr. Greenberg will focus on the importance of implementation quality and planning for sustainability in local communities. Based on research findings, Dr. Greenberg will provide effective, concrete suggestions to further improve the participants' efforts and high-quality, long-term, sustained prevention programming for children, youth, and families.

Biographical Sketch

Dr. Greenberg holds The Bennett Endowed Chair in Prevention Research in Penn State's College of Health and Human Development. He is the Director of the Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development. Since 1981, Dr. Greenberg has been examining the effectiveness of school and family-based curricula to improve the social, emotional, and cognitive competence of elementary-aged children.

Dr. Greenberg is a senior investigator on a number of prevention projects in Pennsylvania including Fast Track (NIMH-funded), PROSPER (with Richard Spoth at Iowa State, NIDA funded), Communities That Care, and REACH (Kellogg Foundation). Dr. Greenberg is the author of more than 200 journal articles and book chapters on developmental psychopathology, well-being, and the effects of prevention efforts on children and families. He consults with government agencies and foundations at the local, state, federal, and international level on topics related to child development and mental health promotion. In 2002, he was awarded the Distinguished Research Scientist Award of the Society for Prevention Research. Dr. Greenberg is a member of the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
