About Denver

Before its founding in 1858, Denver was home to the Cheyenne and Arapaho Native American tribes. The "Mile-High City" became a boomtown after gold was discovered at the Cherry Creek and South Platte Rivers. Kicking off the Colorado gold rush, Denver's population grew to more than 106,000 by 1890.

Today, Denver proper has 554,000 people and the population of the surrounding metro area is 2.4 million. Situated on high rolling plains at the foot of the Colorado Rockies, its mild, dry climate attracts outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The city boasts more than 200 parks and a restored historic district that's the tenth largest downtown area in the United States.

Also known as the "Queen City of the Plains" for its early sophistication in the rugged West, Denver offers a wide variety of cultural, shopping and dining choices as well as sports events and recreational activities.
